Retinal involvement in severe noncerebral malaria

Cited in Scopus: 0A 20-year-old male patient complained of reduced vision after being admitted to a hospital in Bangladesh with 5 days of fever associated with convulsions and anemia (hematocrit 11%). Uncorrected visual acuity was 20/80 OD and 20/64 OS. Bedside dilated ophthalmic examination, registered using a portable fundus imaging device (Kowa Genesis-D), revealed white-centred hemorrhages in 4 quadrants, diffuse disc pallor, and preretinal macular hemorrhages in both eyes. The patient was diagnosed with malarial retinopathy, an ocular manifestation of Plasmodium falciparum infection.
